Initial consultation terms
Last updated: 7 October 2026
Where our website says an initial consultation may be free, these terms apply. They are here so you know exactly what to expect before you get in touch.
What the initial consultation is
It is a short first conversation with one of our lawyers, in person, by phone or by video call. We use it to understand your situation, tell you whether and how we can help, and explain our fees and the likely next steps.
When it is free
- A free initial consultation is offered at our discretion and depends on the type of matter. We will tell you before the consultation whether it is free or whether a fee applies, so you are never charged without agreeing first.
- For divorce matters, the first consultation is free.
- Immigration, employment and employment contract review matters are not covered by a free consultation.
- It is one consultation per person for each new matter.
- The length of the consultation is set by the lawyer, depending on the matter.
What it does not include
The initial consultation is not formal legal advice on which you should act. It does not include reviewing documents in detail, drafting or sending letters, written advice, or attending court or meetings for you. Any of that work is done only once you instruct us, and is charged as agreed in our letter of engagement.
Before we can speak with you
As a law firm we must check that we have no conflict of interest, for example that we do not already act for the other side. If there is a conflict, we will let you know that we cannot act and will not be able to hold the consultation.
Confidentiality
What you tell us in the consultation is kept confidential, whether or not you go on to instruct us. We handle your personal data as set out in our Privacy Policy.
When we act for you
We act for you only once we have agreed the scope of the work and our fees with you in writing. Holding an initial consultation does not by itself mean we have been engaged.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The version on this page on the date you contact us is the one that applies.
